Today's diamond of the day is The Amsterdam Diamond, a black diamond weighing 33.74 carats (6.75 g). It's cut to a pear shape and was sold in 2001 for $US352,000, the highest price paid for a black diamond at auction.

• Black diamonds are also called Carbonado. A name coined by Portuguese because of the diamonds resemblance to porous charcoal.

• They are found in the Central Africa and Brazil, with Brazil being the major source.

• The natural colour of a black diamond ranges from black to dark greys.

Black Diamonds - Exciting, Unusual and Affordable

Black diamonds are a rare and exciting form of diamond that create unique and unusual pieces of jewellery. Black diamonds hold their colour due to the graphite molecular structure of the molecules inside the stone.

Mystery has always surround this stone, from Indian, South American to European mythology. In ancient Indian mythology, the stone was believed to be the eyes of a serpent and was dedicated to Yama, the God of Death. Another larger black diamond is the Black Diamond of Bahia, which was discovered in Brazil, at 350ct! The stone is in its pure rugged state as it is so hard that it cannot be polished. However, the most famous is thought to be the Black Star of Africa, which is often regarded as the largest diamond in the world at 202ct, and was valued at $1.2m.
